After receiving his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Louisville in Kentucky, Dr. Scanlan served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for three years. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He began his ophthalmology practice in Montgomery in 1969.

Dr. Scanlan is a Board-Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and is a two-term past President of the Alabama Academy of ophthalmology.
